Négatifs

Negatives is a sculptural document. The performance begins with the creation of a mixture of plaster and polystyrene, which is placed inside a balloon. The participants set this mass in motion with methodical slowness. As the plaster begins to heat up, their bodies press the material until it hardens. Holding each other by the forearms, the participants ensure that the entire sculpture does not touch the ground. As the heat from the solid subsides, they withdraw to reveal organic traces at the intersection of a strange yet familiar humanoid protoform.

These gestures are both ritualistic and escapist: an attempt to escape gravity, falling, the ground. As it slowly hardens, the sculpture becomes a temporary organism, neither entirely human nor entirely mineral.
